Kalaripayattu is an Indian martial art that originated in Kerala. It is known for its long-standing history within Indian martial arts and is one of the oldest surviving martial arts in India. It is stated that the principle of Kalaripayattu was that knowledge of the art is used to further worthy causes, and not for the advancement of one's selfish interests. The word Kalaripayattu is a combination of two Malayalam words - Kalari (training ground or battleground) and payattu (training of martial arts). It is a martial art designed for the ancient battlefield with weapons and combative techniques that are unique to Kerala and is taught by the Indian guru-shishya system.
The art also bases medical treatment which is a unique system of its own. Practitioners of Kalaripayattu possess an intricate knowledge of pressure points on the human body and healing techniques. It is claimed that experienced Kalari warriors could disable or kill their opponents by merely striking the correct marma (vital point) on their opponent's body. This technique is taught only to the most promising and level-headed students to discourage misuse of the technique. Marmashastram stresses the knowledge of marma and is also used for marma treatment (marmachikitsa).
Kalaripayattu was among the most important aspects of Keralite society, as it helped impart military training and Spartan-like discipline amongst the youth of Kerala, irrespective of caste, community or sex, unlike in other parts of India. Women in Keralite society also underwent training in Kalaripayattu, and still do so to this day.
